The Advanced Biofuels Coalition welcomes the Clean Energy Technology Observatory (CETO) report on Advanced Biofuels in the European Union. The Coalition, representing the advanced biofuels industry, values the insights from the report, considering advanced biofuels’ contribution to decarbonizing transport in the EU.
The report highlights the growing use of advanced biofuels, which are made from feedstocks listed in Part A of Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive. Their consumption exceeded 2 Mtoe in 2022, accounting for 16% of total biofuel consumption.
According to the report, overall biofuel production in the EU decreased by 16% in 2023, primarily due to a reduction in biodiesel production. While consumption is up, production has not followed the same trajectory.
This is a critical issue that the Coalition urges the soon-to-be-published Clean Industrial Deal to address. The Coalition calls for a focus on de-risking measures (loan guarantees, contracts-for-difference) and for ensuring that energy taxation encourages the production and uptake of advanced biofuels.
Reaching the ambition of the Union’s 2040 Climate Target will require a significant transformation of European industry, with considerable investments in sustainable energy capacity. Strengthening the business case for advanced biofuels will build investment security and drive capital towards biorefinery projects.
The Coalition supports efforts to scale advanced biofuel production capacity and strengthen the EU’s competitive advantage in the sector to meet increased demand and achieve the EU’s decarbonization goals.
