Advanced Biofuels Coalition rebrands & calls on the EU to unlock production capacity in Europe

The Advanced Biofuels Coalition has launched its manifesto, outlining key policy priorities to bolster the advanced biofuels sector and accelerate Europe's journey to net-zero emissions.

3 September 2024. The Advanced Biofuels Coalition has launched its manifesto, outlining key policy priorities to bolster the advanced biofuels sector and accelerate Europe’s journey to net-zero emissions. This launch coincides with the Coalition’s rebranding, from Advanced Biofuels Coalition, LSB to Advanced Biofuels Coalition, AdvancEU aimed at reinforcing its commitment to scaling up the European production capacity of advanced biofuels.

Advanced biofuels are essential for driving Europe’s transition away from fossil fuels towards a sustainable future. Produced from waste and residues, and often drop-in solutions, these fuels offer a seamless and cost-effective alternative for various industries and applications, crucial for achieving climate neutrality. Advanced biofuels, as defined in Renewable Energy Directive Annex IX Part A, are a solution to reduce emissions in industry and transport, including also harder to decarbonize transport modes such as aviation, maritime, and heavy-duty transport.

European leadership in advanced biofuels

Europe has the potential to become a global leader in advanced biofuel production, but concerted efforts are needed to scale up production capacity and foster innovation. The Coalition calls upon policymakers to take a technology-neutral approach, providing regulatory stability and attracting investments to the region. Without intervention, Europe risks losing the race as the frontrunner in advanced biofuels, compared to other aspiring bioeconomy leaders such as the United States.

“Investing in advanced biofuels is not just an environmental imperative; it’s also a strategic investment in Europe’s energy security and economic competitiveness,” said Sophia Haywood, Chair of Advanced Biofuels Coalition, AdvancEU. “Our manifesto outlines pathways for policy makers to support and accelerate the growth of this vital sector. The coalition is committed to unlocking the production capacity for advanced biofuels in Europe, we want to see industry developing and growing here in Europe, getting the added benefit of jobs and economic growth across the value chain, and contributing to the strategic autonomy of the EU. Let’s not miss this huge opportunity.”

Strengthening the business case

The Coalition aims to reinforce the business case for investment in advanced biofuels by advocating for long-term regulatory certainty and creating a competitive framework. It proposes implementing a taxation scheme that encourages the production and uptake of advanced biofuels, ending the stalemate with the Energy Taxation Directive. It also calls for policy certainty regarding RED III targets, which currently face a cliff edge in 2030 with no clarity yet on how this will be taken forward by the EU Commission.

Additionally, the Coalition suggests considering dedicated sub-mandate targets for advanced biofuels, distinct from e-fuels, in FuelEU Maritime and ReFuel Aviation as part of its 2026/27 review.

“Target fatigue is real and a focus on implementation is necessary, however, enabling successful implementation and ensuring the ambition continues to grow should not be mutually exclusive. Industry and investors are looking to the future, and as predicted by the IEA and others, there is only going to be a hugely growing demand for advanced biofuels – yet this is not reflected in legislation which is needed to get commercial projects over the line at scale.” Added Haywood.

About the Advanced Biofuels Coalition

The Advanced Biofuels Coalition consists of leading advanced biofuels technology developers and producers committed to making a significant contribution to meeting the EU ambitions of decarbonizing EU. The Coalition represents organizations across the whole advanced biofuels value chain, from companies carrying out commercial production today, the enabling supply chain and those investing in the future production pipeline. Traditionally used mainly in the transport sector, the use of advanced biofuels is increasing also in other sectors. Advanced biofuels bring multiple benefits in terms of CO2 reduction, investments, revenues for farmers and forest owners, improved waste management practices, job creation, and an increase in energy security and strategic autonomy.

Alongside the manifesto release, the Coalition introduced its revamped website and branding, providing comprehensive information about its mission, members, and industry insights. Learn more at www.advancedbiofuelscoalition.eu/.
